Stories Fueling a Revolution - Literature in TranslationAge: 13+ Time: 10:00 - 10:50 Class Fee: $10 Material Fee: $15 | Class Description Reading and discussion based class. This course explores the works of Chinese author Lao She, with a particular focus on his novel Rickshaw Boy, alongside selected readings from Charles Dickens and key May Fourth Movement writers. We will analyze Lao She’s vivid portrayal of urban life in early 20th-century Beijing, examining themes of poverty, resilience, and social change. Through comparative readings, we will draw parallels between Lao She’s narrative techniques and Dickens’s depictions of Victorian society, as well as the modernist impulses found in May Fourth literature. Students will engage in critical discussions that highlight the cultural, historical, and literary contexts of these works, fostering a deeper understanding of cross-cultural narratives and their implications on social commentary. Two tracks will be available in this class, depending on individual parent/student interest. Book club track: students will be asked to read in-between Monday classes and come to class ready for discussion. Language arts track: optionally, students can also submit a term paper in week 7 on a topic related to the reading. This course mimics a college seminar and contains some mature topics intended for teens. Instructor Elizabeth Chu has a MA in Chinese Literature & Culture from U.C. Berkeley. TA Shawna Bodine has her MA of Literature from University of Vermont. Welcome to OzAge: 7-10 Time: 10:00 - 10:50 Class Fee: $10 Material Fee: $15 | Class Description In this drama-style class, students will learn to perform a simplified rendition of The Wizard of Oz. Each week, we will rehearse the scenes in the play and make scenery/props as time allows. On the last day of classes (March 3rd) students will perform their play on stage during lunchtime for the whole community. There will be speaking and nonspeaking roles in the play, so students who do not want to have lines can still participate. Students will be expected to be able to focus on learning the play during class time and working on scenery/props. Being able to read is NOT a requirement since some roles have fewer or no lines and help can be provided until they are remembered. The material fee will cover printing the scripts, making and printing programs for the performance, and scenery/props that are made for the play. Depending on their role, parents will need to provide a costume for their child's part in the play. You will be informed of your child's role after the first week and if a costume is needed (which can be very simple or elaborate, depending on what the child wants). Art for TeensAge: 13+ Time: 11:00 - 11:50 Class Fee: $15 Material Fee: $15 | Class Description This class will provide teens with an opportunity to do some art - perhaps try new mediums, or explore a new subject, or experiment with a new technique. Whether they're new to art, have dabbled a bit in the past, or are super skilled, it doesn't matter. I will bring a variety of materials and art supplies each week - markers, coloring pencils, watercolor paint, some acrylics, paint brushes, paper of different types, pencils, and fine tipped ink pens. (Unfortunately we can't cover all the bases, because some materials are incredibly messy, or super stinky, or wildly expensive. But I'll do my best to have a wide variety of supplies on hand.) I will also make a variety of books available on different mediums, styles and techniques, if they want to look up how to do something (I have books on figure studies, watercolor techniques, cartooning, and a variety of other reference materials for artists.) For those who aren't sure where to begin or aren't in the mood to produce something from scratch, I'll bring a few 'adult coloring books' so they can still engage in something creative. I will also have suggestions for topics if they can't think of something they want to work on, and will be available to help with mastering different mediums if they want pointers, but there will be no requirements for what they work on each each week. As long as they're doing something creative, and have something to show for their time at the end of class, it'll be a win. The goal here is to provide an opportunity to experiment creatively, maybe try something new, or refine a technique they're already familiar with. Hopefully, by the end of the 8 weeks, they'll have a few pieces they really like, will be a little more confident in their own artistic abilities, and will have had some fun. Class rules:
