This group is for children ages 3-5 of any language development level. We'll be building vocabulary, supporting language development and phonological (sound) awareness, practicing pre-literacy skills, as well as getting lots of practice with peer-to-peer social interactions. We will learn about their significance to our ecosystem, life cycle, habitat, and preservation. Each group will get the chance to defend a point of view, to counter the point of view, and to be the control group aka "judge" the other groups arguments. This class will help kids to think outside the box, to gather information and collaborate to try to "win" their point of view (even if they do not agree on it). Group participation is strongly encouraged, as is giving everyone a chance to speak if they would like - however I will not require everyone to speak for their group, only if they want to. Literary Crafts for Book LoversAge: 13+ Time: 11:00 - 11:50 Class Fee: $15 Material Fee: $15 | Class Description This class would focus on crafts that are either inspired by well loved books, or literally use books to create the craft item. (We would only use thrifted and/or damaged books to craft with!) Examples: Wreaths made of flowers and leaves cut from stained book pages Posters made using words/pages/illustrations cut from books 3D wall decor made with folded/cut pages from old books Handmade Bookmarks Jewelry (primarily earrings and necklace pendants) made using book pages, or created to look like tiny books Ornaments made to celebrate a favorite book character or author Each week we would focus on a different craft, all of them tied to the books/series/characters/authors loved by each kid in the class, with lots of freedom to interpret the craft in a way that they like best. Some crafts may be a little more time consuming, and need two weeks to complete. Idealy, while we're crafting, I'll be able to get the kids to talk about what books/series they love best, why they love them, and who their favorite characters are. Best case scenario, they'll learn about interesting books from each other that they haven't read yet, or discover someone else who they share a favorite series with. Although this class is primarily for teens, we would welcome slightly younger readers as well, who enjoy a good book, love to do creative tasks, and would get into crafts that blend the two. See description. | Class Description Together we will learn some basic water color techniques that we can use to make interesting art. This class will include some guided projects and plenty of time for creative expression using watercolors. Your child will likely enjoy this class if they are able to sit and focus on art projects for at least 30 minutes. We will be using paint and water - although washable, plan for clothing you don't mind getting messy! This class will not include a teacher materials fee however if your child signs up for the class I will be sending a list of suggested supplies for them to bring to participate. Cinderella Jr.: A Children's PlayAge: 8-13 Time: 1:00 - 1:50 Class Fee: $10 Material Fee: 25 - to go toward costumes and props | Class Description Transport to a world of enchantment where a pumpkin becomes a carriage, glass slippers lead to destiny, and one night can change everything. This drama class is student led by Natalie Simon, with adult supervision. She has written a scrip for Cinderella and has parts for anyone who wants to be involved! The first day there will be auditions for parts and scripts available to take home and memorize lines. Each week, students will be working on lines for their scene and/or helping build sets and make props if it's not their turn. There are speaking and non-speaking parts available for those students who wish to participate, but don't want to read lines, and there are spots for those who want to work with props only (which will involve helping with set changes). The play will be performed on the last day of the spring term during lunch on the stage in the gym. Material fees will go toward costumes and props! A note about food allergies/intolerances: There are no peanuts in any of these recipes. However, the vast majority of these recipes contain at least some combination of dairy products, eggs, flour, and almonds or pistacchios (tree nuts). Since most of these recipes couldn't be changed without completely altering their flavor profiles and methods of production, this class would NOT be a good fit for a kid who is allergic to any of the foods listed above. This spring, we will dive into the world of printmaking—a type of art that allows an artist to transfer images from one surface to another. Many types of printmaking also allow artists to make multiple copies of the same artwork! In Art Lab, children will have the opportunity to create: puzzled foam prints, new gelli print techniques, styrofoam prints, stamp-making, and more. ZentangleAge: 9-12, 13+ Time: 2:00 - 2:50 Class Fee: $15 Material Fee: 20 | Class Description Zentangle is a style of doodling and pattern drawing that is intended to be relaxing. The creators of the style refer to it as "meditative drawing." In this class we will cover different "tangles" or patterns that are already established. Students will have the ability to combine these ideas into unique works of their own, from serene to wacky and everywhere in-between. To keep the material fee relatively low we will be working with very basic tools in black and white and not approaching much color or shading, though this can be done outside of class if desired. Our Marvelous MittenAge: 8-12 Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $20 Material Fee: $10 | Class Description Let’s step into the past, and learn about what life was like in Michigan 50 years ago, 100 years ago, 1,000 years ago, and even 40,000 into the past! Students will learn about the formation and geologic history of our state, explore Indigenous stories and culture, and consider what life was like for Michigan’s early European settlers. We will read books by local authors and artists, dive into Great Lakes history and lore, talk about life in 20th century Michigan, and learn about the hidden treasures of this amazing state. Students will gain a greater understanding of how we’re connected to one other and our bioregion, and will learn to notice echoes of the past in their own daily lives. Class Structure Instructor Led: Students will be led in activities by the instructor for all or most of the class time.

Games of the AgesAge: 10-13 Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $15 Material Fee: $10 | Class Description Let's learn some games from around the world and back in time. With a different game introduced each week we will try various styles of logic and chance games from times/places like Ancient Egypt and Medieval Europe, Asia and Africa, and more. All games will be played tabletop style with basic materials provided that will be sent home throughout the 8wk session. Tea TimeAge: 3-5, 5-8 Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $20 Material Fee: None | Class Description We will sample and learn about a different tea each week. Please note that some teas will have caffeine, however we will learn how to brew it in a way that reduces the caffeine by 80%. The rest of the class will be a social hour in which tea sets for dolls and/or stuffed animals will be available. Students may bring toys to class as long as they can keep track of them. Maker’s SpaceAge: 9-12, 13+ Time: 3:00 - 3:50 Class Fee: $10 Material Fee: $10 | Class Description Calling crafters and artists! This class will be an open space for creating with friends or on your own, with a variety of supplies available. There will be ideas and books for inspiration, but projects will be up to the individual. Makers are welcome to continue one project throughout multiple weeks, continue a project from home or complete something new each class period. Class Structure Student Led: Instructors may have some class activities planned but will give the students freedom to direct and change how they learn the material introduced.
